Sam Spencer and Wendy Roloson founded Spencer Roloson Winery in 1998 with a single goal in mind: to make wines that reflect their vineyards, remaining true to their varietal character. Guided by that goal, they targeted the vineyard sites and designed, selected, and planted the vines to pursue the highest quality of wine making. Dirt to finished bottle, they have meticulously built the brand together, contributing to different aspects but always coming back to their single vision.

They are dedicated to the wines of the Rhone Valley and Spain and attempt to create wines that reflect their heritage. Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Zinfandel are not the typical lineup coming out of the Napa Valley, but they demonstrate the breadth and versatility of the sites.

2005 Syrah La Herradura Vineyards

Syrah

The La Herradura Vineyard is a brilliant site tucked into the lower slopes of Howell Mountain in the Conn Valley. In 1999 Sam Spencer planted this vineyard on family land with Côte Rôtie selections. The vineyard is an almost perfect amphitheater encompassing 180 degrees of exposure. The soils are thin, gravelly, clay loams on hillside that average 25% slopes. Yields are naturally very low, producing loose clusters with small berries and very thick skins.

"The 2005 Herradura Syrah shows beautifully balanced fruit, glorious aromatics and complexity; the wine is thick with mocha, blackberry and crushed minerals supporting sweet and finely textured tannin. The finish is balanced and persistent. A sixty second experience."
