Along the southern shores of Okanagan Lake, in the interior of British Columbia, lies the Naramata Bench, a west-facing plateau of prime grape growing terroir.  At Poplar Grove the long sunny evenings and the lake's moderating influence help achieve the ripeness and and intensity of the wines.  The winemaking philosophy of Poplar Grove is traditional; no clarifiers, fining agents, or filtration was used in the making of their sophisticated wines.  Ian Sutherland is the winemaker and his wife Gitta manages the vineyards of what has become a much sought after cult winery in BC.

Pinot Gris 2004

The Pinot Gris grapes for this wine were harvested from the "home" vineyards in early October.  The winemaker, Ian Sutherland, was looking for a Pinot Gris with good fruit and some complexity, so he very cold fermented the wine in stainless steel and developed it further in old French Oak barriques.  After barrel aging sur lees for 6 months, the wine was blended and 500 cases were bottled at the mid April 2004.  Serve chilled and enjoy this wine with poultry, fish and seafood.

Benchmark Cabernet Franc 2002

The Cabernet Franc grapes for this wine were hand-picked from the home vineyard. The low yield and gentle processing allowed for the full expression of the varietal's flavours. The wine was barrel fermented in the classic Bordeaux style and finished to dryness in a blend of old and new French Oak barriques.  After aging for 18 months in wood, the barrels were blended and 230 cases were bottled and allowed to further age for 15 months prior to release in early May 2005. It is recommended that this wine be decanted prior to enjoying it with roasted meats, game and poultry.

The Merlot grapes for this wine were hand-harvested from Ian and Gitta's "home" vineyard between October 12th and 14th, 2002.  The wine was fermented in the classic Bordeaux style and finished to dryness French Oak barriques. After aging for 18 months in wood, the barrels were blended and 235 cases were bottled and allowed to further age for 15 months prior to release in early May 2005.  It is recommended that this wine be decanted prior to enjoying it with roasted meats, game and poultry.

Reserve 2001  Merlot-Cabernet Franc

Eight barrels of the 2001 Merlot and 2 barrels of the 2001 Cabernet Franc were chosen for this wine.  After fermentation, the two wines were blended and returned to barrel for a full second year.  The third year prior to release completed the marriage of flavours as the wine bottle developed in the winemaker's cellar.  The result is a seamless integration in a traditional style.  The wine is unfined and unfiltered.Toasty French oak on the nose with intense bouquet of chocolate, coffee and all-spice.  Meaty mid-palate with sage and earth notes to compliment the blackberry and cherry fruit.  Very extracted but European in style and texture with fruit and oak tannins providing considerable grip.  The Merlot contributes fruit and finesse while the Cabernet Franc give the wine backbone and structure.  It has a long warm finish.  Released October 2004.  About 235 cases made.SKU 722538
